Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is rooted in a human-centered, holistic approach to training performing artists. I believe that an artist’s greatest superpower is their authenticity—the unique lived experience, perspective, and individuality they bring to their craft. In my classes, I guide students to discover and articulate their point of view while grounding their work in disciplined preparation, historical and contextual study, and foundational technique. This approach cultivates performers who are confident, adaptable, and able to engage deeply with material in rehearsal, performance, and auditions.
In training Musical Theatre students, I emphasize integration of technique and artistry across acting, voice, movement, and storytelling. I also prioritize preparing students for the broader realities of the field, including professional skills, branding, wellness, and collaboration. My goal is to support well-rounded artists who are prepared for sustainable careers, equipped to navigate challenges, and capable of creating meaningful impact onstage and in their communities.
I approach recruitment, curriculum, and mentorship with transparency and care, helping students see how their training aligns with the demands of the contemporary industry. I believe in cultivating a community that extends beyond undergraduate studies through alumni support, networking, and ongoing mentorship. Ultimately, my teaching strives to produce performers who are bold, empathetic, disciplined, and deeply human.
Culture and Belonging Statement
Culture and belonging are the foundation of my teaching, directing, and artistic practice. I am committed to creating spaces where all students feel safe, seen, and empowered to take creative risks. In every classroom, rehearsal, or production, I establish clear expectations rooted in respect, empathy, accountability, and growth, and I actively address behaviors or structures that undermine inclusion. I prioritize civil discourse, equitable participation, and the honoring of diverse perspectives in all aspects of creative work.
Belonging means more than physical inclusion—it is creating environments where students feel valued and encouraged to bring their full selves to the work. Throughout my career, from directing productions to leading organizations, as well as teaching and mentoring students, I have intentionally centered underrepresented voices and fostered opportunities for authentic storytelling. I also work to cultivate long-term community connections through mentorship, engagement, and non-transactional connections.
I collaborate with colleagues, students, and staff across diverse identities and disciplines, always aiming to uphold dignity, respect, and equity. I stand firmly against discrimination, harassment, or exclusion of any kind. By modeling inclusive practices, fostering empathetic dialogue, and supporting each individual as a whole artist, I strive to cultivate a culture where every individual can thrive, grow, and contribute meaningfully.
